#1847 French Pastel, 19th Century, c.1886, Documented Artist

Beautiful French Pastel under glass in old ornate frame.  The pastel is signed M. C. Kimball who is shown in references as being an American Artist who exhibited a portrait drawing in a Paris Salon in 1886.  Whether or not it was this portrait or another, we don't know.  The source for this information is Artprice.com and American Art at the Nineteenth-Century Paris Salons, page 361.  There is a stamped label on the back written in French which appears to say something about

"Honorable Mention at Exposition Universelle of 1855, Papier, Carton, Chassis, Toiles, Anti-Ponce pour le Pastel, P. L. Brevete, PARIS, Marque Deposee."

This appears to be the stamp of the manufacturer of the board/paper used by artists for their creations.  Apparently, this manufacturer was given honorable mention for his products at the 1855 Exposition.

#1926 Old Oil Paintings

The pair are in gorgeous gilt frames.  Unsigned, but the second one pictured (Madonna) has writing on back (see picture below).  Someone has been kind enough to e-mail us a translation of the writing:

"Detail of Raffaello painting of the Madonna Granduca painted in Florence Italy in 1504 by Raffaello and now at the Pitti Palace in Florence."

We suspect these paintings were possibly painted by art students who copied from the old originals.  Nevertheless, even these are old in their own right.  Notice the old style of the writing on the backside pictured below.  Full views of the backs are also pictured below.

If anyone else can add additional information, please let us know.

Approximately 15" x 12 1/4".

#1836 Old French Prints
Pair of old prints in beautiful old French frames.  Approximately 18 1/2" wide x 23 1/8" tall.  This is a picture of just one.  The other will be posted at a later time, or we can e-mail it to you upon request.
On the backside of one of them is a handwritten note saying they are copies of old French paintings and were framed as a gift for someone on April 28, 1986.  The note also says the old frames were imported from Paris.  How old the prints are, we don't know.  As for the frames, they are obviously quite old and very beautiful.  They are gilt wood with ornate rose swags at the top as you can see.

The note is not written on the print itself, but on the paper backing placed there as part of the framing.  Because of that paper backing, we haven't seen the prints out the frame at all, so don't know what may be on the back of the actual prints.

Though prints, we think they are quite elegant, and certainly the frames are a big part of that.  They came from a Dallas estate sale a few years ago.
