Love Story from JKW and
Others |
JKW is for
Josef Kuba Porcelain Factory
and Decorating Shop who decorated in the "Vienna
Style"
It was established in Carlsbad around
1930 and then
re-established after World War II in Wiesau, Bavaria, Germany.
(Source: Directory
of European Porcelain by Danckert, page 496). Later marks of
JKW include the words Western
Germany, used after Germany was divided into East and
West in late
1949.
Notice that some of the JKW marks
shown below are stamped
over another mark. That was typical of decorating shops to use whiteware
produced by other factories and then cover up the factory mark with their
own decorating mark. For example, JKW
used whiteware from Schumann and
Hutschenreuther and no doubt
others as well.
The word Foreign in the marks is for export purposes.
Alt Wien in the marks translates to
Old Vienna, meaning the decoration was in the Vienna style.
The beehive marks have been used
by countless factories and decorators and are representative of the
Vienna style of decoration -- do not mistake these
beehives as being from the Royal Porcelain Factory
Vienna who originated the beehive and used it only during the
years 1744-1864
(page 575 of Rontgen's revised third edition
of Marks on German, Bohemian, and Austrian
Porcelain). The royal factory in Vienna closed
in 1864, after which many factories and decorators began imitating the
beehive mark as well as imitating the Vienna style of decoration.
Those later products are beautiful and collectible in their own right as
long as they are not misrepresented as being from the old royal factory in
Vienna.
The Love Story
figural scenes are in transfer and reproduced from the work of
Fragonard,
a French
Rococo-era artist, 1732-1806.
His work has been widely reproduced by many factories and decorating
studios.
You'll notice the assorted marks in the
Love Story pieces shown below.
With the exception of the Gloria plate, I believe they were
all produced
by the JKW studio. The
other marks were most likely those of retailers, exporters, importers, etc., who
distributed the JKW products
under their own name. |
All of the pieces shown below with the
4000 lot numbers came from the same source -- one big collection
that originated in Canada and eventually ended up with a collector in
Minnesota. We were fortunate enough to acquire this beautiful
Love Story collection from the Minnesota collector. |

#4086 Gloria Fine Porzelain Love Story Plate |
Anton Weidl Porzellan Works, Bayreuth, Germany.
Originally established in 1920 in
Altrohlau, Bohemia, and moved to
Bayreuth after World War II. It is
still in business today. (Source:
Marks on German, Bohemian, and Austrian Porcelain,
by Rontgen, page 379). This is obviously
a later mark for them.
According to
Danckert's Directory of European Porcelain, pages 49 and 703, Rembrandt is referring
to the style of decoration. They decorated in the styles of
Old Vienna, Meissen, and Rembrandt.
This beautiful plate is 11"
diameter with a scalloped rim. Excellent condition.

#3912 JKW Carlsbad
Love Story
Dinner Set |
With only the word Carlsbad in the marks
on this set, we believe it
to be late 1940's (after World War II and before the division
of Germany in late 1949 into East
and West). Later marks of
JKW include the words Western
Germany, which these do not have. Notice that the JKW mark is stamped
over another mark. That was typical of decorating shops to use
whiteware produced by other factories and then attempt to cover up that mark
with their own decorating mark. We purchased this set from a German family who received
them around 1960 from the owner of the factory. They
were still packed in their original boxes, straw and all. At the point
that we made the purchase, most of the original packing had already been
discarded, so we were able to salvage only the two paper labels which are
shown below and seem to indicate the name of the shape
(Fanny Elbler)
and color (Margrit
Rose) of the set. This set had NEVER BEEN USED
and in pristine condition.
